The work carers do has historically been undervalued and under-supported, with many people in the care role experiencing poor wellbeing, social isolation, and an overall lack of support. In recent years, there has been a shift towards “recognising, valuing and supporting” people who care for those who need it.
In July and August 2019 the Ministry of Social Development asked for feedback on the draft of the New Zealand Carers’ Strategy Action Plan 2019 – 2023 (Link to summary of the action plan PDF 518.63KB).
We endorse the proposed Action Plan, however, we also have two recommended changes to ensure that the plan is successful across the board. You can read about our recommendations for changes to the plan in our submission to the Ministry of Social Development.
